Mr Mabeta said he was discouraged the moment he saw a group of former Glencore employees being among the top four companies to partner with Government in Mopani negotiations and realised how difficult the final negotiations would be.
He said the Mopani Glencore deal gave Glencore the right to buy and sell all the copper produced by Mopani at marketing fee of US$3,000 per ton.
“Having former Glencore employees being among the top companies willing to partner with Government is like having your step daughter among the top contenders for a block of flats you want to sell some shares to get rid of your wife after a bitter divorce while rentals still go into your wife’s account being the major shareholder,” Mr Mabeta said.
He said it was evident that Glencore was not going to easily give up on Mopani and that the situation had kept on getting worse by the day.
“Maybe the government should just agree with former Glencore employees on conditions that apart from head of finance, head of mining and head of security, the rest of the positions should be held by Zambians,” he said.
