PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is surrounded by selfish individuals who are in government for self-aggrandisement and are tarnishing his image, former Northern Province Minister Lazarus Chungu has said.

Mr Chungu said, the people surrounding the head of state are the ones violating human rights with impunity.
He said, these people have not accepted that the President can be criticized, therefore, they are harassing and threatening people.
Speaking when he featured on Millennium TV programme dubbed “Millennium Tonight” on Monday evening, Mr Chungu said the people surrounding the President are the ones instructing police officers to abduct people.
“There are praise singers who do not want their leader to be criticised. The UPND need to pull up their socks because the method that was used for UPND to be in power was marred with a lot of propaganda, it was marred with a lot deception and if you get something using deceit it will not take long for people to discover that actually you lied.
So even us we cannot be quiet but we shall continue to criticise because things are not being done in the right manner.
“We have people who have not accepted that the President can be criticized, therefore they are harassing people. People are being harassed, threatened just for criticising the President,” he says.
And Mr Chungu said Politically we still have a long way to go to match our pronouncements with actions.
He said the new dawn administration has been boasting that the political environment is conducive now when in fact it is now more toxic.
“People are being bundled in police vehicles like criminals in the middle of the night from one town to another and their relatives do not know what is happening.
These are some of the things people are not happy with, the human rights need to be protected,”Mr Chungu said.
