DESERTIFICATION has become one of the major causes to land degradation in Zambia and Africa as a whole leading to social and economic challenges including reduced food production and drying up water resources, the Greenit Environmental Management Network has said.
Greenit Environmental Management Network director of programmes and development Anthony Simukonde says desertification has also been the major cause of human migration especially in rural areas in search of hospitable dwelling areas and land to grow food.
Speaking on the eve of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Droughts which falls today, Mr Simukonde said it was worrying that over 3 billion people globally were negatively affected by land degradation as a result of desertification.
