PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema and his predecessor Edgar Lungu missed the opportunity to reconcile and unite on the national day of prayer which would have enhanced unity of purpose in the nation, veteran politician George Mpombo has said.
Dr. Mpombo said the two leaders were supposed to be there side by side during this national event and the nation would have gotten a cue out of that gesture.
He said the nation looks up to the leaders and when they engage in constructive meetings, national unity and reconstruction such actions trickle down to the people.
Dr. Mpombo said the national day of prayer provided an opportunity for the two leaders to meet and draw up an agenda for national reconstruction and unity because without that the nation would just be tinkling at the edges.
He said the country cannot continue to be in a perpetual state of hatred and resentment.
“These are evils that undermine humanity and unity of purpose,” he said.
Dr. Mpombo said the two leaders should understand that the country was bigger than any political differences and it was incumbent upon leadership at every occasion to plant a seed of unity and to make sure that the country was moving in the right direction.
He said without political unity all the things that the nation would want to put in place would translate into nothing. Dr. Mpombo said people appreciate action and once they see that from the leaders it would inspire them to follow in the same route.
Mr Hichilema shunned the national day of prayer and fasting while his predecessor shunned the official gathering at which he was invited and attended a church service in Mtendere Township.
