GOVERNMENT must explain where the US$1.3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) grant is, Patriotic Front Central Committee Member in charge of legal Brian Mundubile has said.
He said Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane did tell Parliament that Zambia had received US$1.3 billion grant but government is quiet on how it is being utilised.
Mr Mundubile, who is also leader of the opposition in Parliament said the Finance minister said the US$1.3 billion would be used to employ teachers, nurses, doctors and for other social services.
The story, he said, had now changed, and is that the money to be raised from the removal of fuel subsidies would be used to create jobs.
Mr Mundubile, who is Mporokoso Member of Parliament said this sudden change of things could not go unquestioned.
“The minister explained to us that this money will be used to employ teachers, nurses and doctors and also attend to social needs, but today the story has changed. This is the problem we have with the UPND.
“And to be able to achieve policy consistency Cabinet meet and what is discussed is what you communicate to the people. But with UPND we see ministers giving contradictory statements,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Mundubile challenged the ministries of Finance and Energy to clarify whether it was true that there will be another fuel increment.
He said the silence from the two ministries was worrying.
Mr Mundubile said it will be important that Zambians are given the government’s position on the matter.
