THE reality of governance has now caught up with President Hakainde Hichilema because when in opposition he was daydreaming and judging PF decisions harshly but now he has woken up to the truth, Patriotic Front (PF) vice President, Given Lubinda has said.
Mr. Lubinda said President Hichilema has backtracked on a number of promises made to the people during the campaigns because the reality of governance doesn’t agree with him.
He said in an interview that Mr. Hichilema has broken the record of being the first President to start becoming unpopular within the first 100 days of governance for having backtracked on a number of his campaign promises.
He said the head of State has faced reality and is now making decisions he condemned when he was in opposition; among them increasing the electricity tariffs which he said were melting like butter in the desert.
“At every turn, the UPND are departing from their promises and they do it with a lot of cheekiness as if people do not have a record of what they were saying,
“We have video recordings of Mr. Hichilema saying the electricity tariffs melt like butter in the desert but now he is saying we are going to increase the tariffs because it’s a necessity to grow the economy,” he said.
Mr. Lubinda who is former Justice Minister said the UPND has also backtracked on the promise to do away with the Public Order Act (POA) when they form government because it’s a draconian piece of legislation.
He said President Hichilema when in opposition told his Members of Parliament to reject consideration of the POA amendment bill when it was presented to parliament saying it wasn’t good enough.
Mr. Lubinda stated that amendments that the PF regime proposed were meant to expand the political space of politicians to engage without having to follow stringent provisions which Mr. Hichilema through his MPs rejected but today they are defending the same POA they condemned.
