I WILL fire the entire police and recruit new people when I form government because the current crop has become too partisan to the extent of getting instructions from cadres on who to arrest, PF senior member, Chishimba Kambwili has said.
Dr Kambwili said it was sad that the police had started detaining political figures without a solid reason and failing to give then bond even when a matter was bondable.
He said the culture of using the police to intimidate political opponents must come to an end.
Dr Kambwili was speaking outside Chelstone Police Station where he was denied access to PF Information and Publicity chairman, Raphael Nakachinda, who has been detained for allegedly defaming the President.
He however said that in as much as Mr Nakacinda may have transgressed the law, his matter was bailable and was not expected to remain in detention.
Dr Kambwili, condemned the police for allegedly failing to act in accordance with the law.
He vowed to fire the entire the police when he forms government and recruit new people.
Dr Kambwili called on Zambians not to allow the new government to turn the country into a police state.
“No, this has to come to end. we will not allow this as Zambians and I call on Zambians, please stand up and say no to these things. Yes, if somebody has committed an offence, you have the right to arrest them and take them before the law enforcement agencies, take them to court but do not detain them anyhow. And cadres should not be running the country, when cadres instruct you to arrest and you the police do just that. I think when I come, ill fire the entire police and start all over again,” he said.
Dr Kambwili expressed disappointment with President Hakainde Hichilema for allowing the police to brutalise innocent citizens when he was a victim of police brutality himself.
He said President Hichilema instructed police not to arrest people before thoroughly investigating a matter and to give bond where it was due but wondered why he had u-turned on his word.
“Provide leadership my brother, do not go back to what you promised to fight,” Dr Kambwili said.
