TRADITIONAL leaders in Southern Province should ensure that electorates give us progressive Members of Parliament so that together we can deliver the much needed development in the area, President Edgar Lungu has said.
And President Lungu has assured the chiefs that he would consult the Ministry of Local Government on possibilities of dividing Monze into two, to create Chona district on the eastern side.
He said this during a meeting with Chief Chona in Monze yesterday who requested the Head of State to consider breaking the district into two.
President Lungu said the previous team of MPs in the province was immune to development.
He said the MPs had deliberately abandoned their duty to lobby for development from the government.
President Lungu said the national cake for development was limited hence there was need for representatives of the people to lobby so that their respective areas were not left out.
He called on the traditional leadership in the province to give the PF government MPs who were yearning for development.
“I can summarise your request your Royal Highness to the fact that you want development. That is why you want a district of your own. That is why we are saying give us people who can work with us to bring development.
“On the dividing of the district, I will consult with Ministry of Local Government to see if it is feasible,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Chona told the President that being hilly, Monze east was not receiving a fair share of development like Monze Central.
He called on President Lungu to divide Monze into two so that the Eastern side could be a stand alone district.
Chief Chona said Chikankata had witnessed impressive development from the time it was set apart from Mazabuka.
