Dear Editor,
ZAMBIA is one of the countries that have been hit by Covid-19. More than 1, 000 people have died from the coronavirus since the pandemic broke out last year in March. The number of people who contracted coronavirus in Zambia is almost 100, 000.
Zambia should brace for the third wave of the Covid-19 which is more deadly than other forms recorded in the country so far. Our country has in the recent past recorded a spike in the coronavirus disease.
In the period leading to last Thursday, Zambia recorded 825 Covid-19 cases from 10, 949 tests conducted. This figure of coronavirus pandemic was too big to be recorded in a single day.
The country is expected to witness a surge in coronavirus cases in a few weeks’ time as the temperature continues to drop because of the cold season. This is according to the medical experts.
The worse scenario being that Zambia is most likely to record 500 Covid-19 cases daily. This is a sad development.
To this end, people should not drop the guard against the Covid-19 pandemic. They should strictly adhere to the Covid-19 health guidelines such as masking up, observing social distance and sanitizing their hands among others.
It is unfortunate that some people still doubt about the presence of Covid-19. The crux of the matter is that it is real and many people across the globe have died from the pandemic.
Zambia recently received 100, 000 doses of Sinopharm from China. The consignment of the vaccine is set to benefit 50, 000 people because it is a two-dose vaccine.
The battle against Covid-19 is a mammoth one. Let us not drop the guard as our country braces for the third wave of the pandemic.
ELEMIYA PHIRI,
Lusaka.
