THE upgrading of Chishimba mini-hydro power station will increase economic activities not only in Kasama district but the province as a whole, Kasama district commissioner Kelly Kashiwa has said.
Mr Kashiwa said President Edgar Lungu was committed to ensuring that electricity reached all rural parts of Zambia for the benefit of citizens, especially the grassroots.
He said Government was planning to upgrade the Chishimba hydro power station in Kasama from the current 4 megawatts to 15 megawatts.
“It is pleasing to note that the work is being done in the district by the Zambian power utility company, ZESCO,’’ he said.
Mr Kashiwa said the people of Kasama had for a long time enjoyed stable power supply because of the commitment of Government and the power utility company.
And Mulilansolo ward councillor Aaron Zimba noted that there could be no economic development without adequate power supply.
Mr Zimba said the population of Kasama was growing rapidly and attracting more industries, hence the need for new sources of power.
ZESCO management said the new machinery for the station had been found and that the old infrastructure and machinery was likely to be turned into a museum.
The Chishimba mini hydro power station has been in operation since 1960.
