ZESCO has started the construction of a US$38 million substation in Mpika district to increase the power voltage in the region and surrounding areas.
ZESCO spokesperson Henry Kapata said so far 60 percent of the works had been done on the 33/66kv substation.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Kapata said the US$38 million project started last year in December and he remained optimistic that the project would be completed by 2019.
He explained that the new substation would have a transformer capacity of 180 Mega volt amp.
The ZESCO spokesperson said once the project was done it would bring a reliable energy source to Muchinga, Luapula and Northern provinces adding that it would also address the issues of low voltage the area was presently experiencing.
“The new substation will also work as an alternative for Luapula and Northern provinces respectively,” he said. Mr Kapata said the customer base for Muchinga was now at 23,900 which meant that the demand for electricity in the province was growing.
He said increasing the energy capacity in Mpika and surrounding areas would enhance development activities and bring about economic change in the country.
