PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has commissioned an ultra-modern simulator training Centre at the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Lusaka base aimed at building pilots’ craft and confidence through cost effective, safe and yet realistic training methods on highly computerised L-15 fighter ground attack aircraft.
Speaking at the official opening of the Centre yesterday, President Lungu said that the cost effective facility was progressive and that it would enhance the safety of pilots and aircraft, thereby reducing expenditure on unnecessary procurement of aircraft.
He reiterated that government was committed to equipping the defence forces with modern equipment to enable them address new security challenges efficiently.
The Head of State noted that the world was becoming more technologically advanced, bringing with it new security risks.
He pointed out that the need for modern defence systems could not be overemphasised with the country’s growing economy, which he said was coupled with huge investments from local and foreign investors.
“This facility is a milestone and a show of my government’s commitment to making a smart Zambia. Infrastructure is one of my government’s priority. My government has since engaged private sector to support public infrastructure development,” he said.
Meanwhile, ZAF commander Eric Chimese explained that the advantage of ground based computer training systems for pilots and engineers lay in the ability to simulate aircraft as well as the environment in which they fly. Lt. Gen Chimese pointed out that the new facility would enable pilots and the ground crew to train effectively without using an actual aircraft.
And CATIC president Lee Odingi committed to supporting ZAF with modern equipment, aircrafts and modern infrastructure.
