A 23-YEAR-OLD woman who has been on separation with her husband for two months narrated before a Local Court in Lusaka that her husband’s relatives have been interfering in their marriage, hence seeking divorce.
This is in a case in which Memory Kaoma of Kabanana compound sued her husband, Kelly Mulaba, 27, a farmer of Chamuka for divorce.
The two got married in 2012 and they have one child. Dowry was paid.
Kaoma told Senior Court Magistrate Miyanda Banda sitting with Magistrate Pauline Newa at Matero Local Court that problems started early this year because when they differed with Mulaba’s relative.
Instead of his mother asking what the problem was in their marriage, she squeezed her neck.
She explained that when getting a medical report at police, Mulaba’s mother said that she insulted her and that his relatives suggested that she should go and be taught.
“I asked for forgiveness but Mulaba doesn’t want to forgive me, it is the reason I came to court for divorce so that I am set free,’’ said Kaoma.
In defence, Mulaba said that they were differing with Kaoma because she wanted to commit suicide and that she wanted to burn him in the house despite asking for forgiveness.
“I only forgot to bring the medicine, it is very bitter because my cousin tested it. I don’t want to stay with her because she wants to commit suicide,’’ said Mulaba.
Passing judgment, Magistrate Banda said that love ended and that there was interference in marriage from Mulaba’s family.
He granted the couple divorce ordering Mulaba to compensate Kaoma K4000 with initial payment of K500 followed by monthly instalments of K200 and to be paying child maintenance fee of K200 per month. Property acquired together would be shared equally.
