A 35-year-old man narrated before a Local Court in Lusaka that his wife threatened to burn a child from his girlfriend with hot cooking oil if he brought him into matrimonial home.
Reston Simutowe, a driver of John Laing compound was testifying in a case in which his wife, Theresa Phiri, 29, sued him for reconciliation.
The two got married in 2010 and have two children.
Phiri told Senior Court Magistrate Abbyshine Michelo sitting with Magistrates Mubukwanu Matakala and Esther Mulomba at Kanyama Local Court that problems started when Simutowe’s left her in the village on the pretext that he went to look for a job in Kitwe after selling farm produce but instead went to stay with his girlfriend in Mbala and bought a car.
She was shocked the other day when while at the market a woman approached her and revealed that Simutowe married another woman and had been telling people that she (Phiri) ran away from him.
Simutowe admitted having a child with his girlfriend.
“Simutowe would go to Mbala for two weeks without answering my phone leaving me with nothing. When we sat he said that the woman is just a business partner,
“When I asked him if it is polygamy, he said that they now have two children with his girlfriend although he did not marry her but he will marry another woman after divorcing me,’’ said Phiri.
In defence, Simutowe said that whenever they differed, Phiri would boast that she would not suffer if she left him.
He explained that the car Phiri talked about belonged to an NGO he worked for but he admitted having two children with Georgina Sakala who Phiri threatened to burn with hot cooking oil if brought home.
Magistrate Michelo said that when love ended it became complicated because coupled always differed over small issues.
He ruled a failed reconciliation
