INFORMATION Minister, Dora Siliya has implored Zambians to use social media wisely.
“The coming in of social media which has to a large extent disrupted traditional media, has become very important for everyone to rise to the occasion and strike a balance between private and public good.
Ms Siliya who is Chief government spokesperson said this yesterday in Lusaka during the Media breakfast at Southern sun hotel.
Ms Siliya said if not properly used, social media could impact on national values of love and forgiveness.
“Good manners should assist us isolate those who wish our country to degenerate into a pit of insults in the name of politics,” she said.
She said everyone had something to offer to the nation.
“Let us embrace new technology with dignity and enjoy the opportunities created for the betterment of our nation,” she said.
And Ms Siliya said the media as a mass communication channel, was very critical.
“I will work very closely with all to ensure the profession and the business of media is enhanced,” she said. She explained that as spokesperson on all government affairs, she would use all channels of communication such as town hall meetings, stakeholder meetings, written statements and mass media to keep citizens informed at all times. “After all, the Zambian people have a right to know how their Government is expending national resources as captured in the annual budget,” she said.
