RESIDENTS of Mushindamo were at the weekend treated to a rare spectacle of organised football, in a sports event dubbed African Heroes Day tournament.
The tournament, which was organised by the district administration, saw the winning team walk away with K10,000 and a mobile phone for each player while the runners-up received K5,000 and a wristwatch for each player.
And Mushindamo district commissioner Benson Ngambo said Government attached great importance to sports, especially soccer, because it was a uniting factor.
‘’And that is the more reason why as district administration we thought of organising such an event so that we come together and reflect on the achievements of the freedom fighters,’’ Mr Ngambo said.
And the district commissioner has challenged the people of Mushindamo to inculcate a culture of unity and hard work in order maintain the peace and stability the nation has enjoyed.
He said every citizen should consolidate the achievements of the founding fathers in nation-building, adding that Zambia was a country of equality among men and women, all entitled to the dignity of work and its rewards.
‘’As envisioned by our founding fathers, we should strive to rise to the occasion in the face of challenges and forge ahead to ensure prosperity for every Zambian,’’ he said.
He said that the country had been spared from strife along tribal or ethnic lines, largely by the promotion of the One Zambia, One Nation motto.
