A WOMAN of Kandemba compound in Solwezi has died while eight others are nursing injuries in Solwezi General Hospital after being involved in a road traffic accident.
North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Chola Katanga told the Daily Nation that the incident occurred yesterday around 18:00 hours at Kyawama market and identified the deceased as Mariana Mulaisho, 62.
Mr Katanga explained that the incident occurred when the driver of the vehicle Toyota Corolla registration number 1286 Gift Kawaya lost control due to excessive speeding and hit into several pedestrians who were off the road.
“Ms Mulaisho died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries,” he said.
He said others who survived injuries were Christine Chinyemba, 40, of Kyawama compound, Agnes Malonga, 40, Benson Mumba, 21, Kaima Malama, 41, all of Zambia compound.
Others were Mika Sapalo, 42, Agness Sawalonga, 43, Mary Kambita aged 10 and Chrispin Chinyama, 38, all of Kyawama and Kandemba compound respectively.
“Those who survived sustained injuries ranging from bruises, swollen hands, general body pains and a fractured leg,” he said.
He said all the eight were currently admitted in Solwezi General Hospital but were out of danger.
The body of Ms Mulaisho has been deposited in the Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
“The driver has been arrested and charged for causing death by dangerous driving,” he said.
