Editor,
The story on the prison congestion as cried by your paper in the Friday edition makes sad reading. There is no way we can keep our brothers and sisters in this way despite their criminal records. The number of pre-trial detainees is shocking. Surely, how can a nation which prides itself as a Christian Nation illegally keep people in prisons without trial? I say it’s illegal because many inmates who are incarcerated are remandees with misdemeanour offences. It is unacceptable and this should come to an end. The criminal justice system is to be blamed because of its slow pace to conclude cases on time. The sentencing guidelines also need reforms.
