THE sabotage on ZESCO installations are being carried out by disgruntled elements with technical knowledge and who are conversant with the company’s operations and these are enemies from within, an opposition leader has charged.
The acts of sabotage are not coming from people without any technical knowledge about power lines but should be from disgruntled elements within ZESCO who are conversant with the operations,” says 3rd Liberation Movement President, Enoch Roosevelt Tonga.
And Police have offered K300, 000 reward to anyone with information relating to those sabotaging public installations, Inspector General of police Kakoma Kanganja has announced.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has revealed that he has information of a traditional leader sponsoring acts of Sabotage in the country.
Mr Kanganja has since issued a stern warning against people with criminal minds who have resorted to acts of sabotage that the police would not spare them when found wanting.
Mr Kanganja said he had intelligence information that some criminals are planning to deliberately cause havoc by destroying or vandalizing vital installations which include bridges, power stations, transmission lines Governmnet building, communication facilities among other.
“We therefore call upon the members of the public to be alert and that those who may have information that may lead to the apprehension of criminals behind these illegal acts should report to any nearest police station without delay. “Be informed that the Zambia police has increased the reward for anyone who may have information that may lead to the apprehension of any person or persons behind these clandestine activities of cutting Zesco pylons from K100,000 to K 300,000. Take this an official notification.
“Furthermore, all those that may know people who are planning to engage in activities of sabotage should inform the police as soon as possible”, said Mr Kanganja.
Speaking to the Daily Nation in an interview yesterday, Mr Tonga said it was disheartening seeing citizens of Zambia becoming enemies of their own country.
He said the people involved in the acts of sabotage should be a cartel wanting to see that the government of the day failed to deliver.
“Sabotaging property that is beneficial and helping people is not a proper way of dealing with political issues because it will not only affect government but the entire population.
Mr Tonga said the acts of sabotage and arson were politically motivated to frustrate the government that they were failing to deliver.
