A Lusaka City councillor says authorities are alarmed by the increasing number of pedestrians being hit and killed by vehicles in Kanyama constituency, particularly along the Kanyama, Los Angeles and Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula roads.
Ward councillor Luckson Sakala explained that it was worrying that in most cases it was the young school-going children who were the victims.
He said this on Saturday during the community road works which were being carried out on the same road using the funds contributed by the locals and the business community in the area.
Mr Sakala explained that the roads lacked speed humps, sign posts and pedestrian crossings.
“You know how these drivers [of public service buses] behave when they are driving on our public roads. They over-speed and by doing so they are putting the lives of many people in danger.
“We have witnessed a lot of deaths on this road. And we thought as a community we could do something to address the problem,” he said.
He said the situation had prompted them to raise funds amounting to K15,200 which they had used to put up the missing infrastructure.
Mr Sakala said the project was being coordinated by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) under the St. Joseph Catholic parish.
And CCJP St. Joseph parish coordinator Gertrude Tembo thanked the community members for participating in the project.
“So we wish to thank the community members, the Catholic Church, the business community and the office of the area Member of Parliament for their contribution towards the project,” said Mrs Tembo.
Meanwhile, Ms Enless Banda, who spoke on behalf of the community, said she was optimistic that they would see a reduction on the number of deaths being recorded on the Kanyama-off Los Angeles road once the works were completed.
