Disgraced former Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mutembo Nchito yesterday used the occasion of late President Levy Mwanawasa anniversary to justify the infamous and totally discredited Task Force on Corruption.
He claimed, “On issues to do with fighting corruption he (Mwanawasa) made it a point that we did our job without interference and we went wherever the law took us.
“And one of the greatest memories I have with him were not the happy moments that we had but it was the times when we differed,” he said.
Addressing the memorial service at the Memorial Embassy Park, Nchito claimed that he fought corruption to a point where he did his job without interference
He said Mr. Mwanawasa was a president that he could differ with on a question of principle and live to tell his story.
“…and that might look ordinary but I think it takes a big man to have that humility and that is what the former President was. “He allowed us to prosecute cases even those that made him unpopular.
“I think we all remember the kind of wind that was whipped out in 2006 on account of the fight against corruption that he had waged and I think a lesser mortal would have balked at that but he did not. He fought to the end and I am proud that I was there to see it and I am grateful for the opportunity that I had,” he said.
