… As the young Zambian boxer scoops his first international bout
By MICHAEL MIYOBA
ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions Young boxer Alfred Muwowo scooped his first bout in his boxing career after knocking out Tanzanian Haji Juma in the vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) flyweight title fight at Zmart Mall in Ndola last Sunday evening.
And former WBC champions Catherine Phiri and Charles Manyuchi also recorded victories in their respective non-title bouts.
Muwowo put pressure on Juma with his explosive punches which forced the Tanzanian boxer to surrender in the fifth round of the bout.
The win becomes Muwowo’s seventh win in his career and maintains his unbeaten record with six knockouts. Speaking in an interview after being declared winner, Muwowo commended his coach Mike Zulu and manager Chris Malunga for preparing him adequately for the fight.
Mowowo describe his opponent as “rubbish” and called on the promoters to find a new opponent who would be able to give him a tough fight.
“I train very hard for all my fights so that I can win but my opponent in today’s fight was rubbish. Let them bring another boxer who will be able to give me a good fight,” Muwowo said.
And Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions manager Chris Malunga commended Muwowo’s coach Mike Zulu for the Young Boxer’s brilliant display of punches.
Malunga said Muwowo had proved to the nation how good the young boxer was.
“I’m proud that the money which was used to host this international boxing tournament has produced a Champion. We are grateful to the different stakeholders including the government of Zambia for coming on board to help us,” Malunga said.
And Muwowo’s losing opponent, Haji Juma accepted defeat and commended the Zambian boxer for putting up a determined fight. The Tanzanian boxer who spoke in Swahili said he would go back to the drawing board to prepare adequately for a rematch.
The win presents the new African Boxing Union (ABU) flyweight champions an opportunity to challenge for world titles.
Meanwhile Catherin Phiri amazed boxing fans in Ndola when she knocked out Tanzania’s Flora Machelo within two minutes of the first round with her dangerous punches. The win became Catherine’s first win after her WBC World female bantamweight title split points defeat to Mexican Mariana Trejo in Mexico City on April 2.
In another non-title bout, Charles Manyuchi beat Congolese Sherif Kasongo of Exodus Boxing Promotions via a split point’s decision and redeemed himself from the disappointing first round knock out to Quadratino Abduqaxarov in Singapore last May.
