THE opposition in Zambia should focus on offering checks and balances to the government of the day instead of clinging to selfish approaches, says People’s party president Mike Mulongoti.
Mr Mulongoti said the issue of saying ‘it must be me and nobody else’ was a selfish approach to national matters.
“All of us must accept that there can only be one president at a time and it is time for the opposition to focus on offering checks and balance to the ruling party and that time has come when all political parties should start renewing their registration processes,” he said.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Mulongoti said that opposition parties have decided to start working together because it was the only way they could convince people that they meant well for the people of Zambia.
“As you have observed, we have decided to work together as opposition because we need to start thinking about consolidating our activities because it is with this unity that we can comfort people that we mean well for them,” he said.
Mr Mulongoti indicated that the opposition he was currently working with shared a common agenda and it was that reason that he decided to acquaint himself with those with him and share common goals.
He said that in the next one year, the People’s Party was going to disclose its plans and programmes of action and have it picturized for the Zambian people to truly understand what its mandate was.
Mr Mulongoti said that it was important to realise that governance was more than just being president but making people understand that one was capable of delivering and responding to the needs of Zambians.
“It’s not about each one of us vying for presidency but arriving at a decision that supports one candidate who can give the best to the Zambian people and not just satisfying our egos,” he said.
