THE Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company will construct 2,000 toilets in Matero’s Kapwepwe ward in collaboration with owners of the houses who are expected to contribute 50 percent of the bill, says Patriotic Front councillor Patrick Salubusa.
Mr Salubusa said the project was under the supervision of the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company and that owners of the houses or toilets to be erected would be required to make a 50 percent contribution towards the initiative.
He said a site for the demonstration of toilets in Desai was underway and that 24 people from the community would be involved in building the toilets and that they would include eight local bricklayers, eight youths and eight women as helpers, saying the project required manpower from within the ward as a means of youth and women empowerment.
In an interview, the civic leader said LWSC engineers were on the ground carrying out assessment works of the construction of the 2,000 toilets in Paradise and Desai compounds.
‘‘The construction of 2,000 household toilets is an initiative under the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company with the owner of the house/toilet contributing 50 percent of funds,’’ he said.
Mr Salubusa said the construction of three bridges in Lilanda Site 5 had commenced and that this was in response to the floods the ward has been experiencing.
The councillor pledged to steer development in the ward through hard work by improving the lives of residents.
