A POLICE officer from Bennie Mwiinga police post in Lusaka, identified as Sergeant Ludovic Bwalya, 32, has been murdered by unknown people in the early of Sunday in the Presidential Housing Initiative (PHI) area.
And Inspector general of police Kakoma Kanganja has since directed the Lusaka province command to deploy officers among them to crake squad team to Mtendere compound and surround areas in bid to intensify patrols as well as bringing criminals to book.
Both Lusaka Province deputy commissioner of police Geoffrey Kunda and police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed the incident to the Daily Nation which happened around 04:00 hours on Sunday.
Ms Katongo explained that Sgt Bwalya was discovered by members of the public who reported having found a body of a male person dressed in a police uniform.
“Police officers from Bennie Mwiinga police post then rushed to the scene and found that it was a body of their colleague Sergeant Bwalya. The victim was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” said Ms Katongo.
Ms Katongo explained that Sergeant Bwalya sustained gunshot wounds in the chest. The officer, who was on duty, had asked for permission from his supervisor to knock off early because he had a church programme later in the day.
And Mr Kunda said investigations have since been launched and police will not hesitate to bring the perpetrators behind his death to book.
Meanwhile, Mr Kanganja said the command has received with deep shock and grief especially that the officer was returning home and was in police uniform at a time he met his death after being on duty the whole night protecting the lives and the property.
“We would want to make it clear to criminals behind his death that we shall not rest until all those behind this atrocious crime are brought to book.
“Police officers have a duty of protecting members of the general public therefore for one to be killed in such a heartless manner is something that is incomprehensible and unthinkable,” said Mr Kanganja.
He has since urged the members of the public to corporate with the officers and not feel intimated by their presence as they will be there to protect and not harass them.
