RESIDENTS of Matero’s Kapwepwe ward have raised K3,600 in a fundraising walk to buy furniture for the newly constructed Lilanda police post, says Patriotic Front Kapwepwe 25 ward councillor Patrick Salubusa.
Mr. Salubusa said following the creation of the anti-crime and anti-garbage neighbourhood watch committees in Kapwepwe ward and plans to officially open Lilanda police post next month, residents joined in a fundraising walk to raise money for the purchase of furniture.
In an interview, he said although residents made contributions of K10, K5, K2 and coins, a total of K3,600 was realised and that it was a symbol of unity of purpose.
The civic leader said area Member of Parliament Lloyd Kaziya was happy with the initiative and that he offered to lend a helping hand as the target was to raise K12,000 to furnish the police post so that by July 7, 2017, it could be operational .
“Residents made contributions of amounts like K 10, K 5, K 2 and coins but at the end of the day we manged to gather K3,600; this shows that with unity of purpose we can achieve a lot,” he said.
Mr. Salubusa said local businessman Benson Nyendwa of Moonlight School pledged to buy furniture for one of the three offices for the police post.
He said zone executive committees had promised to raise money through household and shop contributions and that June 15, 2017, would be the deadline for the contributions.
Mr. Salubusa said the fundraising walk also marked the launch of the monthly Smart Kapwepwe Campaign which will see the first weekend in each month dedicated to promoting anti-garbage related activities in the ward. He thanked the Ward Development Committee (WDC), Kapwepwe Natwafwane Project, Zone leadership, Matero Police Station, Lilanda Police Post, Moonlight School, United Church of Zambia Lilanda Congregation and residents of Kapwepwe Ward for their unwavering support towards the initiative.
