ANSWERING the call of nature in nearby shrubs among traders at Kipushi border post, east of Solwezi in North-Western Province would be a thing of the past following a K152, 000 ambitious project to construct an ablution block there.
Traders at the border post in Mushindamo District, dominated with foreign traders, had tolerated answering the call of nature in nearby bushes owing to lack of sanitary conditions there making it unconducive for business and a health hazard.
Mushindamo District Commissioner Benson Ngambo told Daily Nation that the money was part of the K1.4 million 2017 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Government had released to the constituency.
Mr Ngambo said Kipushi border had been operating without proper sanitary facilities for a long time despite amplified trade between Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. Kipushi border lies about 130 kilometers east of Solwezi, the provincial capital of North-Western province and has great potential to boost government revenue.
The declaration of Mushindamo as a district in 2015 raised hope of curbing the smuggling in of goods into Zambia via the Kipushi border.
And the DC said government has allocated K200, 000 for the construction of a 1×2 classroom block at Mujimanzovu Primary School in the district while an additional K200, 000 had also been allocated from the CDF to complete a 1×3 classroom block at Kasapa Primary School in the district. “Government released K700, 000 as part of the K1.4 million CDF for Mushindamo constituency and we sat during a District Development Coordinating Committee meeting and approved some projects and we have allocated sufficient funds to each project until it’s completed,” Mr Ngambo said.
He said K90, 000 has been allocated for the completion of staff houses at Mushindamo Primary School.
“We also approved the construction of a 1×2 classroom block at Mujimanzovu Primary School at a cost of K200, 000 and we are also going to do the upgrading of a borehole from hand pump to submissive pump with elevated water tank at Lamba Day Secondary School,” he said.
Mr Ngambo said his office would ensure that CDF is prudently utilised on projects that will have a positive impact in communities to benefit the people.
He appealed to would be contractors to execute CDF projects in the district to deliver quality works as Government would not condone shoddy works on projects.
