WUSAKILE Member of Parliament Pavyuma Kalobo says there is need to empower women with entrepreneurship skills as a way of reducing their dependency on men.
Speaking when he launched the Wusakile Royal Women Empowerment Scheme at St Francis Catholic Church yesterday, Mr Kalobo said it was important to empower women as the community benefits more from their works.
He thanked Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) for the support rendered to the women through the donation of sewing machines.
Mr Kalobo said the entrepreneurship activities that women carry out in society was meant to raise money for their families and the tailoring and peanut butter-making skills they were learning would go a long way in sustaining their households.
He said through the skills development the women would take care of their families and it was through such small businesses that they earned a living and created employment for other women as well.
“Women are naturally entrepreneurs and whatever they touch grows. As area Member of Parliament I am proud to see these women take up entrepreneurship roles,” he said.
And St Francis parish priest Steven Mwanandelwa urged the women to take advantage of the opportunity and also empower other women through their skills.
Fr Mwanandelwa said the church will work with the women to ensure that they extended the empowerment skills to other groups.
He said he was grateful to KCM and the area MP for donating sewing machines and a peanut butter-making machine to the women group.
