DISPOSING of waste anyhow should not be allowed so as to avoid diseases like cholera, says Kanyama ward councilor Brighton Bilumba.
Mr Bilumba has called on all Kanyama residents to desist from throwing litter carelessly.
The councilor said the residents were dumping waste anyhow in the community especially those at market places.
He said the act was very disappointing and that by-laws were being enforced on those found wanting.
“We have ward development committees in charge but it seems they are not doing their job,” he said.
Speaking to Daily Nation in an interview yesterday, Mr Bilumba said the residents had been avoiding payment of the garbage collection fees to the Community Based Enterprises CBEs and resorted to hiring men with wheelbarrows to do it for them.
He said the ward has about 14 CBEs but were not collecting the garbage due to lack of payment by the residents.
The councilor said some people had resorted to throwing waste in roads especially Mumbwa road.
“Our residents are forgetting that disposing waste carelessly can cause and spread diseases like cholera in the community,” he said.
He said the act of dumping waste by the roadside usually took place at night when most people were asleep.
Mr Bilumba further said that due to lack of manpower by the Lusaka City Council, he had engaged a group of youths to watch and report those found dumping waste carelessly.
He said the only dumping site for waste was in Chunga and WDCs were in charge of collecting garbage to take to the dumping site.
The councilor said all those found guilty would be fined accordingly.
