ONE of India’s highly rated medical experts has offered to work with Zambia in curbing diabetes in women and children by training trainers of trainers.
ACEER Health director Usha Sriram, said the exercise would be executed at no cost to the Zambian government as her non -governmental organisation, Diabetes in Women Worldwide Awareness Advocacy Action Strategies – DWAAS, would sponsor the advocacy programmes.
Dr Sriram said diabetes had proven to be very aggressive in women and children leading to the International Diabetes Federation declaring the theme for the 2017 International Diabetes Day as “Women in Diabetes.“
She has since called for increased awareness activities ahead of the World Diabetes Day observed on November 14 annually.
She said the non-communicable disease was a big global challenge as it leads to more complications especially in expectant mothers who tend to develop heart problems.
And Zambia’s High Commissioner to India Judith Kapijimpanga has praised Dr Sriram for choosing to work with Zambia out of the 54 countries in Africa.
Ms Kapijimpanga said diabetes is a silent killer which needs intervention especially through physical activity and the type of consumables.
“I will write to the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Education, Information and Broadcasting as well as Community Development so that the advocacy programme by DWAAS can succeed in Zambia,” said Ms Kapijimpanga.
