THE entire police service needs an overhaul from top to bottom because it is an embarrassment for the service to be ranked among the 10 worst performing and corrupt police services in Africa and 112 globally, political analysist Alex Ng’oma has said.
And Dr Ngo’ma who is University of Zambia political lecturer said as long as the police itself remains corrupt, eradicating corruption will remain a pipe dream in Zambia.
Dr Ng’oma was reacting to the recently released report by World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI) which ranked Zambia among the 10 worst performing and corrupt police in Africa.
According to WISPI Zambia Police was ranked among 10 worst performing and corrupt in Africa, and 112 out of 127 countries measured globally as being the most underperforming units with Nigeria’s Police Force ranked the worst.
The report said Botswana and Rwanda, which ranked 47 and 50 respectively, were some of the sub-Saharan African countries that performed well on the Index.
But Dr Ng’oma said it was embarrassing that a Christian nation like Zambia could be ranked among the 10 worst performing and corrupt police in Africa and 112 globally.
He said there was need to overhaul the entire police service if sanity was to be returned in the system.
“The ranking is both an embarrassment and wake up call for Zambia. For a long time the people of Zambia have been complaining that the Police is underperforming and not living up to the citizens’ expectations, and that has been confirmed by WISPI.
“That being a case, I call upon the people of Zambia not to stand aloof, but to demand that reform be initiated in the police service with immediate effect so as to professionalise the operations of the police. We must overhaul the entire police from top to bottom,” Dr Ng’oma said.
