SIAVONGA District Commissioner, Lovemore Kanyama has condemned Southern Province chiefs for allegedly promoting divisions by side-lining government in traditional ceremonies and opting to invite the opposition instead.
Mr Kanyama said though he was a proud Tonga, what some chiefs were doing was wrong and should be stopped. “Am proud to be a Tonga but am disturbed how we are trying to misguide our royal highnesses,” Mr Kanyama said.
He implored the United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Haikande Hichilema to discourage the practice by advising their royal highnesses correctly.
He said the trend of disregarding government was dangerous because it could divide the nation by separating the Southern Province chiefs from other provinces.
He called on Mr Hichilema to stop causing divisions between Government and Chiefs in Southern Province.
He said it’s uncalled for, for Hichilena to be accepting invitations as guest of honour at Traditional ceremonies when protocol demands that officials from Government should be the ones to officiate at such important events.
He further appealed to UPND officials in the province to stop drawing traditional leaders into partisan politics saying other provinces are also observing what is happening in the Southern Province and should not be blamed in future when they behave in the same manner.
