COUNCIL workers countrywide have launched a ‘Black Friday’ campaign aimed at pressing Government to centralise the payroll system of all council workers in the country, Zambia United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) deputy general secretary Emmanuel Mwinsa has said.
Mr Mwinsa said the ‘Black Friday’ campaign was aimed at pressing Government to address challenges facing the local authorities, especially the need for Government to centralise the payroll system of all council workers around the country.
“The ‘Black Friday’ campaign also seeks to press Government to increase funding to councils to enable them improve service delivery and conditions of service for their workers,” Mr Mwinsa said.
Mr Mwinsa said the ‘Black Friday’ campaign should not be misunderstood for a political crusade because it was purely an issue between council workers and Government.
“This ‘Black Friday’ is not a political crusade and no one, should misunderstand it to be political. It is an issue between ZULAWU and Government,” he said.
Mr. MWINSA said under the cause, council employees would be required to wear black T-shirts every Friday to advance their cause. The ZULAWU deputy general secretary also lamented that workers in certain councils around the country have gone for many months without pay.
ZULAWU would next month open negotiations for improved salaries and conditions of service with Government.
Key on the agenda for ZULAW is the migration of the council payroll to the Ministry of Finance.
