Construction works at BH-New Soweto market in Lusaka are gratifying and on course and traders should not worry as they will be trading here soon, says Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Administration Kennedy Malama.
Dr. Malama said that the ministry had taken kin interest in markets because the major cause of the cholera outbreak arises from contaminated food and water.
“As a health sector we are showing interest because of the health aspect of food and water in markets. There is quick construction going on at BH-New Soweto market so that the traders can start conducting their business and fend for their families,” he said.
He was speaking after touring the BH-New Soweto market which is under construction in Lusaka.
He further said that the works on the market had reached a critical stage and with the foundation almost complete.
“Officers from Zambia National Service are on the ground and the works are ongoing and they have assured us that they are on course and will be able to finish construction even before the set deadline,” he said
He added that the new Soweto market will have four (4) shades with a minimum of 250 people capacity per shade with 20 water bourn toilets, shower facilities and a properly constructed sewer.
