RECENTLY acquitted Lusaka businessman, Aaron Chungu says he was taken to court simply because he could not succumb to machinations of the disbanded Task Force on Corruption.
“I am proud of having remained truthful throughout my 15 years of prosecution,” Mr Chungu said.
In an interview yesterday, Mr. Chungu said he was taken to court simply because he could not succumb to machinations of the disbanded Task Force on Corruption.
“When I reflect back I can simply say I did the right thing. I remained firm and ensured that this matter was conclusively dealt with by the courts and at the end of the day I was vindicated. I have moved on, life is short and one thing I have learnt over the last 15 years is that if you have ill feelings about people who are doing such things to you, it actually torments your mind.
“Why waste your time to worry about people who are doing such things to you? What is important is to focus on the fact that your mind is clear. More importantly, it is the truth that will set you free. It is through difficult moments that you utilise your time to engage in more constructive things,” Mr. Chungu said.
He said through hard work, he had proved to his accusers that he was not a person they thought he was and he had succeeded in transforming himself from a business executive to a farming guru.
“It is inhuman to see another person go through what I went through. There is a lot more that can be done for this country if we all focus on development through hard work rather than pulling each other down. We need to learn to support each other but I am not saying if you have done something wrong you must not be penalised.
“Let’s learn from those who have achieved and let’s avoid illusions of pettiness of wanting to pull each other down. As far as I am concerned, I have no ill feelings, I am above that and I have moved on. I don’t have time to start worrying about those people anymore,” Mr. Chungu said.
He said throughout his prosecution, he did not focus on the problem but set his mind on solutions, culminating in his recent vindication by the Lusaka High Court.
“The reason why I have fought this battle and come out strongly is because I never worried about those people. If I spent the last 15 years worrying about those people, I could not have been who I am today,” Mr. Chungu said.
