ZAMBIA national soccer team coach, Wedson Nyirenda has named a 21 member squad that will take on South Africa in a friendly match to be played this afternoon in Johannesburg.
Nyirenda will seek to redeem himself and the entire senior national team after Zambia lost its first 2019 Cameroon Africa cup of Nations qualifier 1-0 to group K opponents Mozambique last Saturday.
The friendly fixture will also present an opportunity for Chipolopolo head coach to win back soccer fans trust in him after fans questioned his tactical abilities in the 1-0 home defeat to Mozambique.
Nyirenda has summoned a team of local players consisting of first time call-ups such as Lumwana Radiants’ goal keeper Charles Mweemba, Power Dynamos’s Billy Mutale and Napsa Stars’ Alex Mwamba.
And the team consisting of local players, yesterday left for Johannesburg ahead of their friendly match against Bafana bafana.
Nyirenda explained that the team will use the friendly fixture to prepare for upcoming CHAN and COSAFA assignments.
“This team comprises local players only simply because we will use the friendly to prepare for the CHAN qualifier match against Swazliand and the COSAFA tournament,” Nyirenda said.
The team is without local players from Zanaco and Zesco United as they are engaged with their teams which are taking part in CAF Champions league and CAF Confederations cups respectively.
The friendly will also be Zambia’s second having recorded a barren draw with Gabon in a friendly fixture played on 4th June in Brazzaville.
