By SANFROSSA MANYINDAOVER 500 unionised workers at Neelkanth Lime Plant have staged a work stoppage demanding improved working conditions.The workers complained that their conditions of service were poor despite the company making huge profits.They demanded improved salaries and for the employer to review the collective agreement.But Neelkanth Lime Plant management said the work stoppage by the workers was illegal.Neelkanth Human Resource and Administration Manager Emmanuel Katongo said the stoppage had paralysed production.Mr Katongo said the lime plant had recorded zero production.And Mine Contractors, Factory and Allied Workers Union Secretary General Levi Chimfwembe also described the work stoppage as illegal.Meanwhile Copperbelt assistant labour commissioner Charles Muwowo observed that there was lack of worker education on the collective agreement.He noted that the employees had since been sent home in order to give management a chance to address the concerns.
