Mr. Katambo warned of the resurgence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe and said that the virus was contagious, with variable viruses that were widespread in birds. He said HPAI viruses could kill up to 90 to 100 percent of the flock and cause epidemics that could spread rapidly and devastate the poultry industry, and consequently restrict trade. In a notice issued yesterday, the minister said the virus could affect mammals including human beings who came into contact with the infected poultry.
